It was thought possible that Portuguese studies might be developed because of the importance of the Portuguese element in the local population and because of the importance of Portugal in early relations with the Far East. It was felt that there would be a case for developing this department particularly in view of the needs of China for teaching in Geography and in that case further staff might be needed in the future.

B. Department of Education.

(ix) The Committee emphasized the importance of this Department not only for the training of teachers for the Colony but because of the very large part it might play in the training o: teachers of English in China proper. Sir George Moss drew attention to the high importance attributed by the Chinese Ministry of Education to good teaching of English.
